Located on the western edge of the Gloucester Courthouse village, Newington Baptist Church has greeted travelers and residents with a witness for Christ since the 1840’s. On March 7, 1873, Newington was constituted as Newington Baptist Church (associated with the Southern Baptist Convention, “SBC”).

Reverend Mike Gray
Pastor Mike was born into a military family at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, FL. He was saved because of the testimony of his Dad at Sidi Slamane AFB in Morocco at the age of nine, and later baptized in Kaiserslautern, Germany.
After completing his undergraduate studies at Palm Beach Atlantic College, newly ordained by First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach, Florida, Pastor Mike moved with his wife Cathy to Louisville, Kentucky to begin seminary and a Pastoral Internship at St. Mathews Baptist Church and then a pastorate at Macedonia Baptist in Madison, Indiana. He earned his Master of Divinity from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in June 1978. After pastoring churches in McQuady, Kentucky and Falls Church, Virginia, he moved with his wife and two daughters Lara and Kristen, in October 1992 to Gloucester, Virginia to begin his pastorate at Newington Baptist Church.
Pastor Mike has a strong desire to build up the local church through the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, discipleship, and helping Christians discover, grow into, and live out their mission in Christ.
Pastor Mike is married to Cathy, and together they have two daughters and five grandchildren.

Pastor Brian Burris
Pastor of Children, Youth, and Families
Pastor Brian was born in Ohio and lived most of his early life in Virginia Beach where he was saved in his late teens. After completing his undergraduate studies in Communications at Old Dominion University in 1994, he moved to Gloucester with his wife, Shannon, and he began attending Newington soon after. He earned his Master of Divinity from Liberty University in May 2014, and he was ordained as Pastor in June 2015.
Pastor Brian has a strong desire to build up the local church through the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Him crucified (1 Corinthians 1:23). His goal in ministry can be summed up by Romans 1:16, his favorite verse in the Bible.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” ~Romans 1:16, ESV
He aims to saturate the church in the Gospel of Jesus Christ so that it affects every part of their lives. Without the Gospel of Jesus Christ, nothing else matters.
Pastor Brian is married to Shannon, and together they have a two children, Caitlyn and Chase.
